Carolyn Young bio

Learn about Carolyn’s yoga and health journey.

I tried my first yoga class in 2005 while pregnant with my second son, and have been practicing ever since then. For the past 7 years, I have practiced Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. Ashtanga yoga builds strength, flexibility and discipline. It keeps my body healthy, my mind clear, but most of all, it teaches me to be strong and to never give up.

In June 2018, I spent one month with Sharath Jois, studying and practicing at the Sri K Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute in Mysore, India.

In June 2016, I practiced with Sharath Jois, head authority of Ashtanga Yoga lineage, during his USA Tour in Miami.

In July of 2015, I studied at the well known Miami Life Center, in Miami Beach, Florida with master teachers  Kino MacGregor and Tim Feldmann, for a second  200-hour teacher training certification.

In June of 2010, I completed a 200-hour teacher training at The Yoga Institute in Houston, Texas.

I completed the "Yoga Anatomy" course by Leslie Kaminoff, where I learned about the breath, body alignment and movements of the spine. I learned most importantly how to view the body as a whole, how to integrate the breath with movement, use proper alignment and work with the strength and flexibility of the body to experience each pose fully.

I have been a member of Yoga Alliance since 2010, the organization that regulates yoga worldwide.

Yoga is a personal practice, it's a way to discover myself, where I am constantly learning and observing. It’s not about teaching my body a new pose, but about teaching my mind that with practice, patience, determination, dedication and faith, I can overcome obstacles and achieve my goals.

Since I was a teenager I have been interested in nutrition, healthy eating and fitness.

In my early teenage years I put on extra weight due to irregular meals and unhealthy snacking. After going on a balanced diet and incorporating daily physical activity,  I quickly returned to my ideal weight. I realised early on how important it was to have a regular meal schedule, eat whole, homemade foods and move my body.  I still maintain the same weight as when I was sixteen!

As I look back on each of the different stages in my life, I can see I was always health conscious, but I didn't always make the best choices. The more I researched and learned about nutrition, I have made changes to my diet and lifestyle. I know which foods give me more energy, which foods I am sensitive to and which foods to avoid for healthy glowing skin and a good night sleep. Although, there are many fad-diets and different dietary theories, I have found a way of eating that works best for me.

In July of 2017, I enrolled in the Institute for Integrative Nutrition to become an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach. IIN teaches two important concepts.

  • Bio-individuality. We are all unique! We can see our uniqueness in the clothes we wear, the careers we pursue and the activities we enjoy. Discovering our bio-individuality takes time and constant effort. It can also change over time. It requires us to look inwards and listen to what our body wants and needs.
  • Primary Foods. Primary foods are all the aspects of our life that nourish us. Our relationships, career, spirituality, physical exercise, finances, home environment and many more. All these aspects affect how we look, feel and our general outlook on life.

What we eat impacts us on every level, but being healthy isn't only about the foods we eat.  Being healthy is about finding balance in all areas of our life.

My goal as a Health Coach is to help you achieve a healthy lifestyle through the practice of yoga and healthy lifestyle habits. There is no need for restrictive diets, counting calories or spending endless hours at the gym.

It’s about understanding on a deep level what works best for you and why. I will guide and motivate you to find a diet and lifestyle habits that work for you. Learn more about my health programs.
